Jazz vocalists are a special breed. Divas, crooners, songsmiths, screamers and the delicate Jazz whisperers of song, tend to seize every opportunity to reinvent a craft that’s as old as life itself. Lauren Henderson does this with the ease and grace of someone who knows herself, her voice and the chemistry of elements that make for the remarkably gifted ways she’s managed to take full command of her art, craft and career.
As an Afro-Panamanian woman with deep ties to her Montserrat and Caribbean ancestry, Henderson has a rich connection to musical traditions that are fundamentally important to her music. Digging deep into an international range of musical influences, the encyclopedic range of songs she embraces encompasses Jazz, Latin, pop, soul and R&B classics as well as the luxurious original compositions she sings in both Spanish and English.
A consummate artist whose painstaking approach has manifested the spirit of artists like Sarah Vaughan and Shirley Horn, Henderson bridges the rich vocal traditions of these masters with her own, effortless, contemporary style. Consistently surrounding herself with gifted musicians, Henderson has collaborated with talented artists like Sullivan Fortner, Sean Mason, Michael Thurber, Daniel J. Watts, Joe Saylor, Aaron Parks, Joanna Sternberg, and Jon Batiste.
Beyond her own music, Henderson curates and produces the creative endeavors of other musicians as the founder of Brontosaurus Records, her independent label supporting a wide variety of emerging artists. As vocalist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and CEO, Henderson is indeed a special breed all onto herself.
